Pediatric & Adolescent Draws (Ages 6–17)
Pediatric & Adolescent Draws (Ages 6–17)
At Gifted Hands, we believe that a positive experience at the lab during childhood builds a foundation for a lifetime of healthy habits. Our service for children and teens is designed to be respectful, transparent, and—above all—comfortable.
What This Service Consists Of:
• Honest Communication: We speak directly to the child or teen, explaining the steps in an age-appropriate way. We find that when they know what to expect, their anxiety drops significantly.
• Adolescent-Specific Care: For our teenagers, we prioritize privacy and independence, treating them with the maturity they appreciate while still providing the gentle care they need.
• Butterfly Needle Precision: We continue to use smaller, high-precision equipment to ensure the draw is as quick and painless as possible.
• Fainting Prevention: Many teens experience "white coat syndrome" or lightheadedness. We are trained to perform draws in a seated or reclined position and monitor them closely to ensure they feel 100% steady before we leave.
How to Prepare for Your Visit
Follow these 4 simple steps to make your blood draw quick and easy.
1. Check Your Fasting Instructions
• What to do: Check with your doctor or your lab order to see if you need to "fast."
• The Rule: If you are fasting, do not eat or drink anything (except water) for 8 to 12 hours before I arrive.
• Tip: Most people find it easiest to schedule their appointment first thing in the morning!
2. Drink Plenty of Water
• What to do: Drink 1 or 2 extra glasses of water before your appointment.
• Why: Being hydrated makes your veins "plump" and much easier to find. It makes the whole process faster and more comfortable.
3. Keep Warm
• What to do: Wear a warm sweater or a long-sleeved shirt, especially if it’s chilly.
• Why: When you are warm, your blood flows closer to the surface. When you are cold, your veins "shrink" or hide, which can make the draw more difficult.
4. Have Your Paperwork Ready
• What to do: Please have your Photo ID and your Lab Order (from your doctor) sitting on the table and ready for me.
• Why: This ensures we get the right tests to the right lab without any delays.
Why the Pricing Differs from Younger Children (Under 6):
By age 6, most children have developed larger, more accessible veins and better "cooperative skills." This allows the appointment to move more efficiently and usually requires standard (rather than specialized) pediatric supplies. Because these visits typically take less time and involve less intensive "desensitization" than a toddler visit, we are able to offer this service at a lower rate.
A Message for the Parents of Teens:
We understand that teenagers often have busy schedules and may feel nervous about blood work. Our mobile service allows them to have their labs done in the privacy of their own home—no busy waiting rooms, no peer pressure, just professional and private care.
