What is a Routine Blood Draw?
A routine blood draw, also known as venipuncture, is one of the most common and important medical procedures. It involves using a small, sterile needle to collect a sample of blood from a vein—usually in the crease of your arm—for laboratory testing.
How to prepare:
1. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate!
This is the most important step. Drink plenty of water starting the day before and the morning of your appointment.
• Why? Being well-hydrated makes your veins easier to find and helps the blood flow more smoothly, making the process much faster and more comfortable for you.
2. Check Your Fasting Status
If your doctor ordered "Fasting" labs (common for cholesterol or glucose tests), do not eat or drink anything except water for 8 to 12 hours before your appointment.
• Note: Always take your regular medications unless your doctor told you otherwise.
3. Have Your Documents Ready
To stay on schedule and ensure lab accuracy, please have the following ready when we arrive:
A Valid Photo ID (Driver's license, Passport, or
State ID).
Your Lab Requisition/Order (If your doctor didn't already send it to us)
Insurance Card (The processing lab will need this to bill for the actual testing).
4. Dress for Success
Wear a shirt with sleeves that can easily be rolled up above the elbow. Keeping your arms warm before we arrive also helps with blood flow.
